BSc AI Honours Project 2013 Image Matching on a Smartphone Supervisor: Dr. J.C. van Gemert (j.c.vangemert@uva.nl) The field of computer vision is by impact one of the most forefront fields of AI. Computer vision has matured to a degree that many applications have become possible or nearly are possible. This project aims towards an image indexing scheme for personal image databases on a Smartphone. Here, image search consists of retrieving images that represent the same object viewed from different viewpoints in the presence of occlusions, noise and clutter. Typical applications include finding specific objects or images that are near-copies. In this project we do not consider specific visual recognition tasks, such as face detection and recognition that require dedicated descriptors and detectors. The solution comprises of a Smartphone App, that is either completely stand-alone or operates in a client-server setting. The user snaps a new image and wants to find the most similar image in his or her image collection. Students will be encouraged to implement a real working system on a Smartphone. A background in image processing or Smartphone development is a benefit.
